Your Guide to Malibu Weather in Every Season
While L.A.’s favorite coastal enclave often calls to mind countless days of balmy sunshine, the wonderful thing about Malibu weather is that we’re still lucky enough to enjoy the changing of seasons. As warm summer days turn to crisp autumn nights and blissful winter sunshine gives way to vibrant spring wildflowers, each month is a little bit different, and picturesque in its own way — truly, there’s no wrong time to join us here at Malibu Beach Inn.
Whether you’re just considering a trip or planning to visit us in the near future, here’s a look at the Malibu weather forecast month-by-month, along with some of our favorite things to do in every season.
Weather in Malibu in July, August, and September

There’s a reason these months are considered our high season — this is the peak of quintessential Malibu beach weather. According to data from Weather and Climate, July saunters in with average highs in the low 80s and average rainfall of zero inches (really), making it the driest month of the year. August follows with similar rainfall (or lack thereof) and highs in the mid-80s, with the added benefit of a warmer water temperature than July (64.4 degrees), making it an ideal month for swimming.
While both of those months are wonderful times to visit, we have a particular soft spot for September. As most schools start up again, the bustle of summer travel is behind us, and what’s left is the quiet, laid-back ambiance of the off-season combined with some of the year’s most perfect weather days. Malibu weather in September offers highs in the low-80s, less than a centimeter of average rainfall, and similarly warm water temperatures.
In other words, these months are a beachgoer’s dream. Take advantage of our impeccable summer weather by lounging on one of Malibu’s many idyllic beaches, hitting the water on a paddleboard, or strolling down the Malibu Pier with an ice cream cone in hand.

October in Malibu brings with it refreshing Autumn breezes, abundant sunshine, and plenty of fall harvest spirit as the seasons begin to change. Visitors during this time can expect high temperatures in the mid- to high-70s, with just three days of rain on average (less than one inch total). In November, the highs dip slightly into pleasant low-70s, and there’s still plenty of sunshine to bask in. This is the month to start packing along your favorite sweaters to layer up for cool morning or evening walks on the sands of Carbon Beach.
Rounding out the year, Malibu weather in December offers high temperatures in the mid- to high-60s, boasting just a touch of festive chill and a small amount of rain (less than two inches, and about five days).
The fall and early winter offer perfect conditions for sipping wine at one of our area tasting rooms (such as Rosenthal, or Malibu Wine Safaris if you’re seeking a more adventurous experience). In addition, this is one of the best seasons to go surfing or scuba diving, as the water is generally at its clearest, offering a window into the sea life beneath the surface. Visitors can also indulge in one of CBC Restaurant’s many decadent holiday dinners during this time, too.

The weather in Malibu in January offers a warm reprieve from much of the country’s winter chill, with highs generally in the high 60s and an average of five days of rain — ideal for soaking up some mild rays and beginning the year on a blissful note of self-care. February invites couples in for romantic retreats amid similar high temperatures and about six days of rain (four inches), while Malibu weather in March offers a perfect setting for family spring break getaways as highs sometimes reach the low-70s. There’s plenty of sunshine to be found in both of these months, and summer crowds are usually nowhere to be seen, offering an unobstructed peek at Malibu’s most idyllic vistas.
As such, these are some of our favorite months to go for walks on the beach or drives along the PCH, rain or shine (they’re both beautiful). It’s also the perfect season to take advantage of Malibu’s coastal California dining, starting with our very own CBC Restaurant, or to spend an afternoon at CURE Daily Spa. Whale watching is another popular pastime during these months as gray whales migrate through the area.

Springtime arrives in a bloom of colorful wildflowers and blue-sky days. Malibu weather in April offers consistent high temperatures in the low-70s, and although the saying goes “April showers bring May flowers,” there’s only about three days of rain here this month (one inch total). Even so, May flowers come anyway, along with highs in the mid-70s. The weather in Malibu in May also offers little to no rain, clocking in at just one day and far below one inch.
June begins to kick off our high season, and with good reason — June high temperatures hover in the high-70s, making it plenty warm enough to go for one of your first dips of the year in the Pacific. In these late spring and early summer months, guests can also live like a local by hitting one of the many hiking trails in Malibu, which are often lined with vibrant wildflowers this time of year.
As you can likely tell by now, each season here in Malibu is wonderful in its own way. No matter what time of year you visit, the weather in Malibu (and the scenery among it) is second to none.
